As words don&#8217;t come out as fast as they wish, so, in the first obstacle they tend to give up and immediately change their chip to English.<\/p>\n<p>Most of my students are learning Portuguese for one of three reasons: because they are in the Golden Visa program; because they want to move and live in Portugal; or due to having Portuguese family members and they want to be able to communicate. Everyone visits Portugal, at least once a year, and they get frustrated because they travel to our country with lots of hope that they will practice the language with locals but there\u2019s a simple aspect that, unfortunately, doesn\u2019t usually work in their favour&#8230; When the trip begins in the taxi and my students attempt to slowly speak Portuguese, the taxi driver very kindly swops the speech to English. It is not on purpose; it is just a very typical Portuguese characteristic: we want tourists to feel comfortable in our country and we like to warm them with our hospitality! But together with the people\u2019s sympathy, there goes the attempt to speak Portuguese &#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>The Portuguese are very fond of helping others and that is why they always try to speak in English to make life easier for tourists.<\/p>\n<p>So, I tell my students the secret is persistence. Be persistent and continue the dialogue in Portuguese at your own pace and the other person will eventually understand that what you really want to speak in Portuguese. When this point is successfully reached, you will have all the help and the hospitality that you already had available in English, but now in Portuguese- the Portuguese hospitality will, finally, start to work in your favour.<\/p>\n<p>Be persistent !<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><em>Como \u00e9 que os alunos iniciantes de portugu\u00eas come\u00e7am a comunicar em Portugal?<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>Muitos alunos queixam-se de que querem falar portugu\u00eas em Portugal, mas isso \u00e9 completamente imposs\u00edvel. Quando come\u00e7am a falar e as palavras n\u00e3o saem \u00e0 velocidade que eles querem, \u00e0 primeira contrariedade ou ajuda em ingl\u00eas, desistem logo e mudam o \u201cchip\u201d para o ingl\u00eas.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>A maioria dos meus alunos est\u00e1 a aprender portugu\u00eas por uma das tr\u00eas raz\u00f5es, por estarem no programa Golden Visa, por quererem mudar-se e viver em Portugal ou porque t\u00eam familiares portugueses e querem comunicar com eles.<br \/>\nTodos visitam Portugal, pelo menos uma vez por ano, e ficam frustrados porque v\u00eam com muita esperan\u00e7a de que v\u00e3o praticar muito a l\u00edngua portuguesa com os locais, mas geralmente n\u00e3o \u00e9 isso o que acontece. Mal come\u00e7a a viagem no t\u00e1xi ap\u00f3s a primeira tentativa de conversa, que geralmente \u00e9 mais lenta, o taxista muito gentilmente, muda o discurso imediatamente para o ingl\u00eas. O taxista n\u00e3o faz isto de prop\u00f3sito, mas sim porque \u00e9 uma caracter\u00edstica muito t\u00edpica portuguesa \u2013 somos muito hospitaleiros e gostamos de agradar os turistas. E l\u00e1 se vai a tentativa de falar portugu\u00eas &#8230;.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>Os Portugueses gostam muito de ajudar e por isso tentam sempre falar em ingl\u00eas para facilitar a vida aos turistas.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>Por isso eu digo aos meus alunos que o segredo \u00e9 a persist\u00eancia.<br \/>\nSejam persistentes e continuem o di\u00e1logo em portugu\u00eas no vosso ritmo e o outro interlocutor acabar\u00e1 por compreender que o que se quer mesmo \u00e9 falar em portugu\u00eas.
